Jim Farmer pulls a copperhead snake from its cage at Oconee Reptiles in Walhalla where Farmer keeps several types of snakes and other reptiles. Copperheads and timber rattle snakes are the only venomous snakes found in the Upstate area.

Jim Farmer of Oconee Reptiles holds a black rat snake. Black rat snakes are not poisonous and not aggressive. According to Farmer, they can be useful for rat and mice problems.

Harris' truck flipped on its side after making a turn on to Snow Road in Anderson. Both Harris and his dog did not suffer any major injuries.

Teresa and William "Buddy" DeHaven of Iva have adopted 14 children over the years and have 3 biological children of their own. They currently live in an old church that is no longer used for services. The DeHavens bought the church because of the space that it provides them. Their adopted children come from several different backgrounds and range in age from 7 to 26. Many of the children also have physical and mental disabilities.

The children of the DeHaven family walk past the old First Baptist Church in Iva that the DeHavens bought and are currently living in, on the way to watch the Iva Christmas parade. The church provides them the space that they need to accommodate all their children.

Sandy Springs Fire Department and Zion Fire Department worked to put out tractor-trailer fire on Friday after it side swiped a South Carolina Department of Corrections vehicle at the 19 mile marker on Interstate 85. Philip Lebanno Construction was contracting work through Consolidated Southern Industries who is overseeing the renovation of the over 100 year old building. According to owner of Consolidated Southern, Carey Jones, the building has a couple of people interested in leasing the building. Children at the Salvation Army Boys and Girls Club make finger paintings of whatever they choose during their art entertainment hour after school. The Boys and Girls Club offers an after-school program from 2:30-6:00 Monday through Friday. After all the children have arrived they have "Power Hour" where the children read or do home work. After power hour they break up into age groups and participate in activities such as art, reading, games and gym play. There are about 50-60 children that are a part of the after school program.

Shain Stewart, 47, of LaFrance, plays a mandolin at a guitar booth on US 76 between Clemson and Anderson while waiting for customers to stop by. The booth used to be a fair game booth that was modified to show guitars and other instruments such as mandolins, violins and even a lap steel guitar. Mr. Stewart opens the booth 2-3 times a week. "It's a good starving musician's job," said Mr. Stewart about working at the booth.

Anderson County Firefighter engineer Dana Martin, pulls out a fire house during a house fire at 416 Williamston Road on Thursday afternoon. No injuries were reported. The home, owned by Ronald and Belinda Burgess, was built in 1941. Mr. Burgess ran his business Superior Printing out of the bottom of the house. The couple's son, Daryl Ison, 32, who served in Iraq and is currently in Germany, kept a lot of his of his belongings including momentos from Europe and Iraq in a room upstairs in the house. Shortly before the fire started contractor had finished putting a new roof on the house. "We get a brand new roof and then 30 minutes later this happens," said Mrs. Burgess. The house had some historical significance and was host to famous boxer Jack Dempsy as well as Presidents Dwight Eisenhower and Lyndon Johnson.

Gips Day 1-An Overview

This is a story about the Gip's factory in Hartwell, GA. Gip's is a locally owned slacks manufacturer that closed down in the middle of September after 45 years of business. Gips started in the early 60's and had remained a family business through the years. Most of its employees are women and a lot of them are near retirement age. Some were well past retirement. Now that the plant has closed its employees are either retiring or looking for new jobs; some are looking for new careers. The photos were shot in about a three week time period, documenting its last days.

Gips employee Carol Hiley's daughter-in law's brother found this watch while touring the Okefenokee Swamp in Florida. The watch is given to employees on their 5th year of working at the factory. The watch was given to Carol as a gift before she started working at the factory. It was only until she started working their that she realized where the watch came from.

Many of the Gips employees hang pictures and other collectibles on the pipes and the walls next to their work stations.

Dale Carson (left), 50, supervisor of the front side, who has been at Gips for 15 1/2 years and Jerry Hart, Gips mechanic who has been at the factory for 16 years, joke around during their lunch break. The two have become good friends since working at Gips. "We are like family here," said Mr. Carson.

Linda Hayes, 59, who has worked at Gips for 24 yrs, is the final inspector of all the slacks that come through Gips.

Peggy Price, 66, who has been at Gips for 39 yrs, handles the last pieces of fabric to go through the factory. The pieces of fabric that Mrs. Price works with will eventually be the pockets, belt loops and other small parts of the slacks.

Sylvia Fulbright, 61, who has been at Gips for 20 years, sweeps the front side sewing room after most of the employees had left on Thursday September 13th. That thurdsay was the front side's last day of operation.

Sara Jennings, 55, who has been at Gips for 16 years, finished up her last group of slacks on her last day of work after the final bell had rang. The final bell rings at 5:00 pm.

Beebe Allen, 46, of Hartwell, who has been with Gip's for 5 years, picks up Vice President of Gip's, Tom Hardigree after he said his final goodbyes to the workers in the inspection room. Mrs. Allen said that Mr. Hardigree picks on her jokingly so when he not looking she likes to pick him up. "I had to do it one last time," said Mrs. Allen.

A calendar that was placed on the wall next to a work station counted down the days until the final day of operation at the Gip's factory in Hartwell.

Johanna Pounders, 8, of Anderson feeds hay to mustang yearling phillies that were up for adoption at T. Ed Garrison Arena on Sunday morning. Johanna was particpating in the Clemson University Equestrian Team Fall Show, which was seperate from the adoption, also held at the T. Ed Garrison Arena, and won 5 ribbons. The three-day adoption event featured appromimately 80 wild horses and burros from 5 years old and younger. The adoption was held by the Bureau of Land Management. The BLM manages more land-258 million surface acres-than any other federal agency. Most of this public land is in 12 Western states, including Alaska.

High's reached the upper 90's on Tuesday with heat index temperatures in the 100's. The hot weather is forcasted to continue through the week into the weekend.

Ms. Levy, who is normaly confined to a wheel chair due to spinal problems, stayed seated on the moped to the two drove to Anderson on. "My daughter says I like to live on the wildside of life," said Ms. Levy. "We have a lot of fun and we don't argue too much" said Mr. Bishop. The two were buying the go cart to use for small distance travel in Williamston.

Dustin Swanson, a Masters entomology student at Clemson University, holds a psorophora ciliata mosquito which in native of the eastern united states. This particular type of moquito is a vector for west nile virus.

Children participating in the Crossroads Worldwide Christian Ministries Camp at Anderson University lift Robbie Kropiwnicki, 22, of Boiling Springs, NC on top of a large soccer ball, which the members of the camp call the "Earth Ball", while playing lawn games as a part of the camp. Crossroads Worldwide is bases out of Boiling Springs, NC and host children from all over the southeast. The camp runs for the rest of the week and ends on Friday. This is the fifth week of the camp and the first week they've held the camp at Anderson University.

Johnny Wise and his employees will spend about a week painting the steeple and other surfaces of the church. The church re-paints about every 5 to 10 years.

Mr. Parham got the golf balls at yard sale for cheap so he could practice his swing. "I'm not totally hooked yet,", said Mr. Parham about playing golf. However he did say he tries to play once or twice a week at the Saluda Valley Golf Course.

Camp Hope is a camp held near Clemson University where mentaly disabled people of all ages come to have fun swimming in the lake, making crafts and playing games.

A small tornado ripped through a parking lot at Liberty Elementary School sending several cars flying through the air. Parents were in the parking lot waiting for their children to get out of school. No students were hurt but a few of the parents were taken to the hospital.
